http://www.latimes.com:80/excite/990702/tCB0050035.html Rah-wah-te ra-ke! (A white man is coming!) Spanish explorers record their visit at a Gabrielino village in West Los Angeles. Drawn to abundant water sources, a community of Gabrielinos settled at a spot they named Kuruvungna, or A Place Where We are in the Sun. The site, now known as the Gabrielino / Tongva Springs on the University High School campus, was mentioned in the diary of Father Juan Crespi in August 1769. Crespi was among the first Spaniards to explore California. Known as the Portola Expedition, the group camped at what is now believed to be that flowing springs. While there, Father Junipero Serra presided at Mass for the Indians, an event also recorded in Crespi's diary.
