S. 2519, a bill introduced by Sen. McCain of Arizona,
will assist the use of 911 as a universal emergency number,
but also contains a provision that would make federal
property available to wireless providers without any
consultation regarding local or state zoning and land use
regulations. It is being marked up on Thursday, October 1,
at the Senate Commerce Committee, without any hearings to
solicit local government input. The National Association of
Counties issued an urgent appeal for concerned parties to
contact their Senators on the Commerce Committee, to urge
them to oppose the provision unless it contains modifications
that require local and state land use authorities to be
consulted in the siting of wireless facilities on federal
property. Members of the Senate Commerce Committee are:
Senators McCain, Stevens, Burns, Gorton, Lott, Hutchinson,
Ashcroft, First, Abraham, Brownback, Hollings, Inouye, Ford,
Rockefeller, Kerry, Breaux, Bryan, Dorgan, Wyden, and Snowe.
