AAHS Prehistoric Textile Class

SOUTHWESTERN PREHISTORIC TEXTILES are the subject of a
class to be taught by Lynn Teague of the Arizona State
Museum, offered by the Arizona Archaeological and
Historical Society in conjunction with the Museum. The
dates will be October 22, 29 and November 5, with an
optional session November 12, 7 to 9 pm. In this class
Lynn will cover the fibers used by prehistoric weavers
(animal, vegetable and mineral), spinning tools and
techniques, types of looms and associated tools, fabric
structures, dyes and pigments, approaches to pattern,
regional styles and trade. The optional session on
November 12 is for those interested in learning
archaeological methods for recording textiles. Lynn's
lectures will be accompanied by slides, hands-on
activities and examination of prehistoric textiles in
the collections of the Arizona State Museum. Lynn Teague
is an archaeologist and Curator of Archaeology with the
Arizona State Museum and also an accomplished weaver.
Combining these interests in her research over the years
she has become a major authority on the development and
distribution of prehistoric Native American weaving in
the Southwest. UNM Press is publishing her new book on
the subject, Textiles in Southwestern Prehistory, this
fall. The class will be held at or near the Arizona
State Museum on the University of Arizona campus, 7 to
9 pm. Cost to AAHS members is $25 for the first three
sessions, $35 to non-members. Students and K-12 teachers
receive a $10 discount. The additional session will be
$9 and $12. Pre-registration is required--please call
Jan Bell at 520-326-6709 or email jrbell@u.arizona.edu.
