The SI web site presents an on-line blurb of a
longer article which appears in Smithsonian
Magazine June 1998: " Hang 'em first, try 'em later "
-- the story of the Jersey Lilly Saloon, hard by
the Rio Grande in Langtry Texas, and Judge Roy Bean,
Justice of the Peace, Law West of the Pecos...

"I would announce to my friends and the public in
general, that I have opened another saloon at the
above place, where can be found the best wines,
liquors and cigars...Visitors will always find a
quiet orderly place, where they can get a good
drink... The water is good and the scenery grand.
Will be please to see any of my friends at all
times." Roy Bean, San Antonio Express, 1882.
