Message #189 From: AzTeC SW Archaeology SIG To: "'Matthias Giessler'" Date: Sat, 13 Jun 1998 08:08:43 Subject: Fort West, Gila NM [ AzTeC / SWA SASIG ] : [SASIG Ed. Note -- Please contact Mr. Grandin with your information and Cc SWA SASIG ] From: Randy Grandin Rlgrandin@aol.com I'm doing research on Fort West (near Gila, New Mexico) and I was wondering if you had information on this site. It was only active for one year in 1863, and was named after General West, who supposedly ordered the killing of Mangas Coloradas. I have several letters written to and from the commanders of the fort and a note that the building materials were salvaged and used to build a ranch headquarters at the turn of the century. If you have more information on Fort West, I would appreciate hearing from you. Sincerely, Randy Grandin San Pablo, Calif. A member of the San Pablo Historical Society From: Boise Matthews email@example.com I've only run across several mentions of Fort West, and not much information at that. The references are from University of Michigan's Making of America. One of these resources are letters to and from General Carleton, which may be the letters you already have. Hope this helps.
