are being offered for the first time to encourage
students to attend:

EXPLORING THE CHACOAN WORLD, a three-evening short course
to be taught by archaeologist R. Gwinn Vivian of the
Arizona State Museum, will look at the problems facing
archaeologists attempting to explain what has been termed
"the Chacoan Phenomenon," and the Chacoan world. Gwinn will
review the history of archaeological investigations at Chaco,
the environmental background, the major distinctive attributes
used by archaeologists to define Chacoan culture, and the
array of theories that have developed. Gwinn promises many
slides and handouts as well as ample discussion time. A more
detailed sylabus and a preliminary reading list are available.
Gwinn Vivian, Curator of Archaeology at the Arizona State
Museum and its former Associate Director, has spent much of
his life doing research at and on Chaco Canyon. He has
published numerous articles and books on Chaco including two
articles in the fall 1997 issue of KIVA, Volume 63 Number 1.
The class is being offered by the Arizona Archaeological and
Historical Society and the Arizona State Museum. It will meet
Thursday evenings February 19 and 26, and March 5, from 7 pm to
9 pm on the University of Arizona campus. Fee is $25 for AAHS
members, $35 for non-members. AAHS student members receive
$10 off -- and student memberships are now available as low
as $15. For more information or to register for the class
