Message #55 From: AzTeC SW Archaeology SIG To: "'Matthias Giessler'" Subject: Digging up the Past Date: Sun, 08 Feb 1998 17:51:38 [ AzTeC / SWA SASIG ] From: Catharine Blake Subject: Digging up the Past for Fun! Hi, I am interested finding a group or organization for those interested in archeology as a hobby. Do you know of any such group in the Phoenix area? Catharine -- I recommend a couple of venues. The Arizona Site Stewards help protect sites (digging up stuff, even professionally, destroys it forever); the Arizona Site Stewards are a dedicated group of preservation- minded individuals! The Arizona Archaeological Society Phoenix Chapter meets once a month at Pueblo Grande Museum in Phoenix. An AAS group also meets in Cave Creek. There are perhaps fifteen chapters around Arizona. AAS groups sponsor lectures for the adventurous and for the armchair explorer, young or old. They also go on field trips, and sponsor digs, certification classes and field schools. Call PGM at 495-0901 to get the next Phoenix Chapter meeting date. There also is a local group called SWAT (Southwest Archaeology Team). Many AAS members also belong to SWAT. Arizona Archaeology Month is coming up and there will be an archaeology expo at the Deer Valley Rock Art Center in March. Get a statewide calendar of archaeology and historic preservation events by calling Ann Howard at the AZ SHPO (602) 542-7138 or see http://www.swanet.org/discussion/98/45.html There is more infomation on Southwestern Archaeology Best Wishes!
