The Archdiocese of Santa Fe held a symposium on Monday and Tuesday
(September 8&9) in Santa Fe, NM. Before a capacity crowd, some 23
presenters, ranging from Marc Simmons, Father Tom Steele, and David Snow,
presented new materials about the history of the Catholic Church on the
northern frontiers of New Spain. The presentations covered the settlement
of New Mexico from 1598 until the Statehood period (1912). The
Archdiocese also announced that the papers will be compiled as a book
which will be released in the spring of 1998, near the actual 400th
anniversay date of Don Juan de Onate's original settlement in the
spring of 1598. Coming in the Spring of 1998:  " Seeds of Struggle -
Harvest of Faith: The Papers of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe Catholic
Cuarto Centennial Conference ."  To be put on the mailing list for this
