The Arizona Archaeological and Historical Society is sponsoring a Rock Art Weekend
Workshop with Polly Schaafsma October 24 through 26. The workshop will consist of
sessions at the University of Arizona campus in Tucson and a fieldtrip. Polly will begin
on Friday evening with a survey of regional styles in southwestern rock art. On Saturday
she will discuss issues of interpretation of rock art and give a review of her ongoing
studies of the iconography of warfare. The day will end with a session devoted to
questions and discussion between the audience and a panel consisting of Polly and several
Arizona rock art authorities. On Sunday the group will go with Polly and archaeologist
Henry Wallace to several rock art sites in the Gila Bend area. Polly Schaafsma is widely
recognized as one of, if not the, leading authority on Southwestern rock art. She has
spoken widely on Southwestern rock art and has authored a number of publications, including
Indian Rock Art of the Southwest, Kachinas in the Pueblo World and Rock Art in New Mexico,
widely available in libraries and book stores. Workshop dates are Friday evening, October
24th, and all day Saturday and Sunday October 25th and 26th. AAHS members $50, non-members
$60. Pre-registration is required. Please contact Jan Bell at 520-326-6709 or jrbell@u.arizona.edu.
