Message #379: From: AzTeC SW Archaeology SIG To: "'Matthias Giessler'" Subject: AAAC 1998 Awards In Public Archaeology Date: Thu, 20 Nov 1997 19:27:00 -0700 Encoding: Mime-Version: 1.0 From: Ann Howard THE ARIZONA ARCHAEOLOGY ADVISORY COMMISSION'S 1998 AWARDS IN PUBLIC ARCHAEOLOGY in honor of 1998 ARIZONA ARCHAEOLOGY AWARENESS MONTH "Discover the Road to Ruins!" The Governor's Archaeology Advisory Commission (Commission) is sponsoring the twelfth annual "Awards in Public Archaeology." These awards are offered by the Commission as part of the 1998 Arizona Archaeology Awareness Month celebration (March 1-31, 1998) and are presented to individuals/programs that have contributed time and energy to promoting the protection and preservation of, and education about, Arizona's non-renewable archaeological resources. These awards can include a variety of people and groups (e.g., professional archaeologists, avocational archaeologists, legislators, corporate groups, sensitive developers, Site Stewards, relevant tribal programs, museum programs, state/federal agencies programs, etc.), that are worthy of recognition for their public service endeavors. These endeavors must have helped to protect or preserve archaeological sites, or to raise public awareness of the sensitivity of archaeological sites. (Please note that, unfortunately, nominations for state/federal/tribal agencies should not include cultural resource compliance programs for which the agencies are mandated to operate, even if those entities are doing good jobs.) Award recipients will be honored in a special ceremony at the 1998 Arizona Archaeology Expo, March 14-15, 1998, at the Deer Valley Rock Art Center in Phoenix. If you know of an entity that deserves special recognition for their efforts in Arizona archaeology, please complete a nomination form and mail it to Ann Howard, Public Archaeology Programs Manager, State Historic Preservation Office, Arizona State Parks, 1300 W. Washington, Phoenix, Arizona, 85007. Nominations must be postmarked by January 12, 1998. For more information, or to obtain a nomination form, please contact Ann Howard at (602) 542-7138.
