Subject: Origin Of The AT&SF Railway Symbol

Can anyone please tell me the origin of the AT&SF Railway symbol -- the
horizontal and vertical crossbars in a circle, with "Santa Fe" on the
horizontal bar, that was displayed on countless boxcars and
advertisements throughout the country. Was it inspired by a Southwest
motif? Or did it originate earlier in the East, and travel west with
the railway? Rolf Sinclair
