Message #371: From: AzTeC SW Archaeology SIG To: "'Matthias Giessler'" Subject: Attending To Negative Words [ AzTeC / SWA SASIG ] : From: Austin Lamont I was the one who originally sent Brian the article he titled "Hisatsazi Anasinom?" I'm glad it stimulated a lively and rational debate. Now, "Newsweek" for November 3, 1997 has picked up the story, page 8. It's a department called "PC Watch" and headlined "Tribal Talk." It goes through the "negative" words: abandoned, Anasazi, ancient, primitive, rock art. It includes a picture of Monument Valley! Just to throw in a curve, my personal preferred phrase for the latter is "rock images." You talk to a non-Southwesterner or a non-archaeologist and they have no idea what a petroglyph or a pictograph is. The petroglyph news group debated the "rock art" issue quite a few months ago, and they decided they liked the term.
