The Arizona Republic for May 21, 1997 reports that the Fort McDowell
Mohave-Apache Indian Community is having problems with overcrowding,
litter and destruction of the desert. The tribe has restricted access
to the eight to 10 miles of Verde River that flows through the
reservation. Beginning July 1, the river will be closed to visitors
indefinitely until tribal officials figure out how to deal with the
problem. The Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community closed its
portion of the Verde in April, citing a need for preservation of natural
resources, problems with littering, consumption of alcoholic beverages,
destruction of archeological sites and other acts of vandalism.
