The Center for the American West will conduct a conference called "Seeing
and Being Seen: Tourism in the American West". The May 1-2 conference
will address the pros and cons of the tourist industry on growth,
landscape and environment and the local economy. Speakers Thomas Power,
Chair, Department of Economics, University of Montana, will speak on
"Tourism, Development, and Community Change in the West". Power recently
authored _Lost Landscapes and Failed Economies_ (Island Press) which
argues "how and why economies based on extractive industries (mining,
logging, ranching and agriculture) are rarely stable and rarely lead to a
high quality of life." Conference fee before April: $25. Contact Center
