Blackwater Site @ Gold Canyon - An Update

I would like to thank those of you who made calls to the various Federal,
State and Pinal County agencies expressing your concern over the
destruction of this Hohokam settlement. Although the developer is
complying with State Burial Laws, concerns of not having the research done
on the cultural resources has been brought to the attention of the Advisory
Council on Historic Preservation (Federal) and the Pinal County Board of
Supervisors.

The Advisory Council is investigating why the Enviromental Protection
Agency has permitted action on the Blackwater site. Also, June 13th there
was a meeting between Supervisor Sandi Smith of Pinal County, Carol
Griffth, Deputy SHPO, Joanne Miller, also of SHPO, Jerry Howard, Chairman
of the AZ Archaeological Advisory Commission, Sylvia Lesko, resident of
Pinal County, and myself, where not only was the Blackwater site discussed,
but also
iniating the process of having cultural resource regulations and grading
ordinances established in Pinal County.

Your assistance is still needed in the effort to prevent the potential loss
of cultural resources, without benefit of an archaeological investigation.
This Thursday, June 19th, another zoning hearing is being held in Florence.
This time a petroglyph site just east of the Blackwater site is endangered.

To find out what you can do to help, contact Debbie Canright who is
coordinating this worth while effort. Debbie Canright 602/986-6300
