On June 19th, Pinal County planning /zoning commission approved a zoning
change on 23 acres of land, which is a petroglyph site just east of
Blackwater @ Gold Canyon, in order to have a developer build apx. 100
condos.  No archaeological stipulations were added, despite extensive
discussion and over the objections of some commission members. The zoning
approval now goes before the Board of Supervisors who meet on July 17th in
Florence. Supervisor Sandi Smith is concerned over the lack of arch.
stipulations. Some of you are aware that we are working with Ms. Smith in
order to establish cultural resource policies in Pinal C. and this process
has been initiated. We need assistance from concerned people within
Districts I and III (western and eastern Pinal C.) even though all
supervisors are copied on correspondence. If you have associates or friends
those districts, please tell them what is going on and try to enlist their
support. My thanks to Dr. Paul Fish (ASM) for his very well written letter
to Pinal C., Dr. Dave Abbott for his well timed letter to the editor of the
AJ Independent, Shurban (ASM) and her rock art association and everyone
here locally. It is appreciated.
