Subject: 1997 Awards in Public Archaeology

You are cordially invited to attend the presentation of the 1997 Arizona
Archaeology Advisory Commission's Awards in Public Archaeology in
celebration of 1997 Arizona Archaeology Awareness Month. These awards
were formally known as the "Volunteer in Archaeology Award," but were
expanded by the Commission to include professional archaeologists and
others, such as sensitive developers, relevant Tribal programs, museum
programs, and state/federal agency programs that are worthy of
recognition for their public service endeavors.

These awards are offered by the Commission as part of Arizona's
Archaeology Awareness Month Celebrations (March 1-31, 1997) and are
presented to individuals and programs that have contributed time and
energy to promoting the protection and preservation of, and education
about, Arizona's non-renewable archaeological resources.

Four winners will be honored with the Commission's Awards in Public
Archaeology. The presentation of the 1997 awards will occur on Saturday
March 8, 1997 at 9:00 am at
Casa Grande Ruins, Coolidge, Arizona, during the 1997 Arizona Archaeology
Expo. We hope you will attend and help celebrate these individuals and
programs that make a positive effort in sensitizing Arizona's public to
the uniqueness and fragility of our State's cultural resources.

The 1997 winners are:

Allen Dart, Old Pueblo Archaeology Center, Tucson (Professional
Archaeologist)

Les Chapman, Sierra Vista Chapter of the Arizona Archaeological Society
(Avocational Archaeologist)

Shelley Rasmussen, Phoenix (Arizona Site Steward)

Desert Troon Companies, Prescott (Private Developer / Best Preservation
Program )
