Date: Sun, 16 Feb 1997 17:49:48 -0700

A tour to the Dixie Mine archaeological site will be conducted on

Saturday, February 22, 1997. The multi-component Dixie Mine Site

includes an historic mining site adjacent to a prehistoric

archaeological site (probably Hohokam with some Yavapai use later in

time), petroglyphs, a spring, etc. The site is located within the

Maricopa County McDowell Mountain Regional Park and is monitored daily

by law enforcement personnel and park rangers. The County Park Ranger

will be present for the site tour to explain County management of the

park and the archaeological resource.

The archaeological site tour will be conducted by Brian Kenny,

Environmental Manager/Anthropologist with the Maricopa County Department

of Transportation.

This site tour is a special event and open only to members of the

Arizona Archaeological Society (AAS). As necessary, you can register to

join the AAS by visiting their web page at:

Arizona Archaeological Society (AAS)

If you join the AAS to participate in the field trip, be sure to verify

both registration and your planned site tour attendance with Vicki

To get to the meeting locale from the greater Phoenix area, take the

Beeline Highway to Shea, turn west on Shea (left) to Saguaro Blvd, then

turn north (right) on Saguaro. Drive north into Fountain Hills. When

you get to the lagoon and the fountain, turn west (right) on to

Palisades Blvd. A few blocks distance west of the intersection of

Saguaro and Palisades you will find the Bashas shopping Center on the

south side of Palisades.

From north Phoenix, Take Shea Blvd east toward Fountain Hills. At Shea

and Palisades, turn north (left) on to Palisades and drive north through

Fountain Hills past the Fountain Hills High School; this road curves to

the east past the high school. Continue east on Palisades Blvd. through

the intersection of Palisades and Fountain Hills Blvd. and past the

Safeway shopping center. The Bashas shopping center is located on the

south side of Palisades Blvd. just a few blocks east of the Safeway

shopping center.
