Gran Quivira XXVI - 1997 Conference
San Diego, California, Thursday, October 9 - Sunday, October 12, 1997

The purpose of the XXVI Conference is to inform those in attendance of
recent research and findings in the Spanish Borderlands region and to
highlight the role of sites along San Diego's Founders' Trail.

Gran Quivira begins Thursday evening, October 9, 1997 at 5:30pm, with
registration and a welcoming reception at the Best Western Hacienda Hotel's
Acapulco Restaurant in Old Town, San Diego.

On Friday morning, coffee and pastries will be hosted by the staff of San
Diego City Schools' Old Town Cultural/Historical Program during a
discussion of their integrated program (which is attended by all fourth
graders in the San Diego Unified School District). Narrated bus tours will
be made to Mission San Luis Rey, Rancho Guajome, and the San Pasqual
Battlefield State Historic Park. A sunset reception with wine, eatables,
and entertainment at Cabrillo National Monument concludes the day.

Papers will commence Saturday at 10:30am in the new, state-of-the-art
auditorium at San Diego's Mission Trails Regional Park Visitors' Center
(near the site of the Old Mission Dam) after complimentary coffee and
pastries and a guided walk through the ongoing San Diego Presidio Project's
excavations above Old Town. An alternate schedule is available for those
wishing to visit Rancho Penasquitos, the Serra Museum, and Mission San
Diego de Alcala in addition to Mission Trails Park.

Renowned author (ANTIGUA CALIFORNIA), photographer and historian Harry
Crosby will be the speaker at the Saturday 7pm dinner at Mission Trails
Park Visitors' Center.

Conference attendees will have the option of attending an 8 am Mass on
Sunday morning at Mission San Diego de Alcala. Additional papers will be
