Message #306: From: AzTeC SW Archaeology SIG To: "'Matthias Giessler'" Subject: Pueblo San Marcos Date: Tue, 17 Sep 96 13:16:00 MST Encoding: 18 TEXT From: Maurice Brill I was pleased to see the following announcement in the Archaeological Conservancy Newsletter: The Archaeological Conservancy has entered into an option agreement to acquire an additional 40 acres of Pueblo San Marcos, the largest pueblo ruin in the United States, and perhaps the most important privately-owned ruin in the Southwest. The site has enormous research potential, with 22 blocks of rooms, 9 plazas, acres of middens, and a mission church. The first 20-acre parcel was acquired by the Conservancy in 1981. The site is in the Galisteo Basin just south of Santa Fe. This apparently was the place of refuge that many citizens of Chaco Canyon and Mesa Verde went to, when they abandoned their homes.
