THE ARIZONA ARCHAEOLOGY ADVISORY COMMISSION'S 1997 AWARDS IN PUBLIC
ARCHAEOLOGY in honor of 1997 ARIZONA ARCHAEOLOGY AWARENESS MONTH "History
>From the Ground Up!"

The Governor's Archaeology Advisory Commission (Commission) is sponsoring
the eleventh annual "Awards in Public Archaeology." These awards are
offered by the Commission as part of the 1997 Arizona Archaeology Awareness
Month celebration (March 1-31, 1997) and are presented to
individuals/programs that have contributed time and energy to promoting the
protection and preservation of, and education about, Arizona's non-renewable
archaeological resources.

These awards can include a variety of people and groups (e.g., professional
archaeologists, avocational archaeologists, legislators, corporate groups,
sensitive developers, Site Stewards, relevant tribal programs, museum
programs, state/federal agencies programs, etc.), that are worthy of
recognition for their public service endeavors. These endeavors must have
helped to protect or preserve archaeological sites, or to raise public
awareness of the sensitivity of archaeological sites. (Please note that,
unfortunately, nominations for state/federal/tribal agencies should not
include cultural resource compliance programs for which the agencies are
mandated to operate, even if those entities are doing good jobs.)

If you know of an entity that deserves special recognition for their efforts
in Arizona archaeology, please complete the attached nomination form and
mail it to Ann Howard, Public Archaeology Programs Manager, State Historic
Preservation Office, Arizona State Parks.

Nominations must be postmarked by January 29, 1997. For more information,
please contact Ann Howard, State Historic Preservation Office, Arizona State
Parks, at (602) 542-7138.

Next two announcements:

THE THEME FOR 1997 ARIZONA ARCHAEOLOGY AWARENESS MONTH CHANGES to "HISTORY
FROM THE GROUND UP!"
Due to copyright problems with using the theme "Life in the Past Lane," the
SHPO has had to select a new theme for next year's celebration of AAAM. The
second choice of the planning group that met on August 1st of this year was
"History From the Ground Up!" So, that will be the new theme for 1997 AAAM.
Please use the new theme in your promotional materials. Sorry for any
inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your continued support!!
And, remember, your activities/events to be listed in the 1997 AAAM Listing
of Events (formerly "Calendar of Events") are due to Ann Howard at SHPO by
November 22, 1996. Thanks!

your Park can participate in the annual Expo. This will be our
second-to-last planning meeting and we need your help. Don't forget, Expo
Participation Forms are due on November 22, 1996! WE HOPE TO SEE YOU
THERE! For more information, please contact Ann Howard, SHPO, at
