          THE NEW MEXICO ENVIRONMENTAL SYMPOSIUM
"Nature and Human Nature in Environmental History"
                          at the
University of New Mexico in Albuquerque
                    April 6 & 7, 1996

Participants include: William deBuys, Dan Flores, Max Oelschlaeger,
Virginia Scharff, Andy Kirk, Paul Hirt, John Herron, Vera Norwood

The idea of "nature" as a cultural construct has been a popular topic
lately. Less often addressed, however, is the concept of "human nature"
in environmental discourse. The purpose of this Symposium is to make a
significant contribution to this ongoing debate about "nature," while
expanding the discussion to include new perspectives on the
interrelationship between ideas of "nature" and underinterrogated notions
of "human nature."
