Archaeological Site Tour -- Historic (and Prehistoric) Phoenix

Desert Archaeology is conducting excavations within blocks 72 and 73 of the
Original Phoenix Town Site. Late nineteenth and early twentieth century
occupation is well preserved, particularly in the north half of Block 73.
Over 200 feature have been found. In addition, three prehistoric pithouses
and several pits have been found dispersed over both blocks. One house
produced a date of 1800 B.P. More prehistoric features may be revealed
beneath the historic features. This work is sponsored by the General
Services Administration and is being carried out under contract with Dames
and Moore. The property is owned by the City of Phoenix. It is the future
site of the new Phoenix Federal Building and United States Courthouse. The
tour is open only to professional archaeologist. Please plan to join the
tour of these excavations at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, December 10, 1996. Please
park along 5th Avenue between Washington and Jefferson. For further
