Editor's Note: Dr. McKee , you go first, please ;> http://www.theatlantic.com/unbound/interviews/int2002-03-07.htm Within certain communities -- archaeological, anthropological, environmental -- there is bitter debate over how many Indians were in the Western Hemisphere before Columbus's arrival. Some people don't like scholars who argue for a huge death tally, because it feels to them like another self-hating spasm of political correctness -- an academic left-wing attack on Western civilization as inherently murderous. Others don't like the high numbers because they want to view the pre-contact environment as an ecological touchstone -- nature as it oughta be. Having too many Indians around interferes with this. They think that arguing that there is no wilderness, no preferred state, is a right-wing strategy for legitimizing a corporate assault on the environment. GLOBALIZATION http://chronicle.com/free/v49/i35/35b00701.htm A lot of nonsense about the impact of globalization on culture passes for conventional wisdom these days. People everywhere have more choice, but they often choose similar things. That worries cultural pessimists, even though the right to choose to be the same is an essential part of freedom. http://web.mid-day.com/news/nation/2003/may/52082.htm In the third century BC, Buddha's ashes were distributed equally into 84,000 caskets and placed in 84,000 stupas. Three cities are fighting over a casket of Buddha, the only one to have been discovered. In 1998 when the lid was first opened, a small portion of the holy ash blew away in the wind. ***************************************** Contact the Newsletter Editor: archaeologist@rocketmail.com dogyears@dogyears.com www.swanet.org (url) 602.697.5754 (cellular) 602.372.8539 (digital fax) 603.457.7957 (digital fax) Post letter mail and other media to: Southwestern Archaeology, Inc.
