She is one of the few Cahuilla to document her Indian culture and history in a book she co-authored with anthropologist Lowell Bean, “Temalpakh: Cahuilla Indian Knowledge and Usage of Plants.”

One Buffalo Soldier, Cathay Williams, enlisted in the Thirty-Eighth United States Infantry, Company A, as William Cathay. At that time there were no required medical examinations to enlist and the uniforms worn by her regiment were not figure flattering. During her service, she was stationed in New Mexico. Just two people knew her secret.
