This day is called the solstice, which comes from a Latin word that means "Sun standing still." The Sun still moves across the sky as Earth turns on its axis, but for awhile it doesn't appear to move either north or south. In centuries past, the solstice was the beginning of a new year. At this time of year, Antares is just appearing in the morning sky at first light. You can look for Antares yourself at first light. It's a bright red star, very low in the southeast. You need a clear horizon to see it. To find it, look almost directly below Venus, the brilliant "morning star." Officially, the solstice begins tomorrow at 8:37 a.m. ET, when the sun is at its farthest from this hemisphere's latitude and its closest to the equator. Then the cycle is reversed. The night will stretch across 16 hours. Some will dance. Some will listen to prayers to gods. Some will paint themselves blue and run naked in the woods. Some will sing 'Joy to the World' a la Three Dog Night. CYBERIA http://www.latimes.com:80/news/nation/20001219/t000120936.html Addiction is a ticket out of Sheshatshiu and other native communities in northeast Canada. http://nativecalling.org/ A radio call-in show yesterday discussed the book "Darkness in El Dorado." The program host asked these questions: "Does the study of a culture by outsiders bring negative consequences to that culture? Anthropologists impose their will and create myths and false images and harmful consequences in Native America. Does the study of another culture by outsiders create harmful consequences simply by being there? How does it continue to harm Native America today? How should these perpetrators be dealt with?" http://www.theage.com.au:80/news/2000/12/20/FFX5MFF6XGC.html Curators of St Petersburg's National History Museum have put together a collection of communist underwear from 1917 to 1991. The Soviet panties, bras and corsets are accompanied by family photographs and poignant testimony from those forced to endure underwear designed under state control. Drawn by nostalgia and horror, citizens of St Petersburg have been forming Soviet-style queues outside the museum. ***************************************** Newsletter Editor: Brian W.
