Camping ...

There are no camping facilities at the conference site. For those wishing to camp, we suggest using the group site of Ponderosa Campground located approximately 13 miles west of White Rock on State Road 4.

Ponderosa Campground at Bandelier National Monument is the designated camping area for the 2005 Pecos Conference. There are picnic tables, water, fire hearths and toilets in the campground. Campfires must be in a fire hearth, or may be prohibited altogether if this current dry spell continues. Please check with the campground host before building any fires. The camping fee is one dollar per person, per night (pay at the kiosk) and payment is on the honor system. No recreational vehicles are allowed at Ponderosa.

Sawyers Hill Camping is located approximately three miles west of the Ponderosa Campground on the Santa Fe National Forest off of State Road 4. There are no improvements, but there will be several porta potties at the campsite. There is no charge to stay at this campground.

Graduation Flats Camping is located approximately six miles west of Ponderosa Campground on the Santa Fe National Forest. There are no improvements at this scenic meadow site and there is no charge either. Several porta potties will be at the campsite.

Camp May campground is located at approximately 9,000 feet in elevation immediately past the Los Alamos ski area. For those wishing for a cool, high elevation camping experience, and don’t mind the extra driving, this is the place. This campground is run by the County of Los Alamos and the fee is $6.00 per night. There are no improvements.

Other camping can be found to the west of Los Alamos and Bandelier on the Santa Fe National Forest. There are many areas near Forest Road 289 that are suitable for car camping. There are, however, no developed campsites.

Recreational Vehicles. We recommend that most recreational vehicles use Juniper Campground at Bandelier National Monument. There are no hook-ups for RVs, but each campsite has a picnic table and fire hearth. Water and restrooms are centrally located within the campground. There is also a RV dump station located in the campground. The camping fee is $12.00 per night and those with the Golden Age card or the Golden Access card the charge is $6.00 per night.

Recreational vehicles are permitted at East Gate in Los Alamos County. Here the charge is $6.00 per night. There are no improvements or amenities, but there is a scenic canyon immediately to the north of the area.

Showers are available at the public pool (Larry R. Walkup Aquatic Center, 2760 Canyon Rd., Tel. 505.662.8170), and at the YMCA in Los Alamos. There is a small fee at each facility.
